Can’t Buy Me Love

Today’s bumper sticker theology: “Forgiveness is giving up all hope for a better past.” Today’s Gospel reading, the parable of the prodigal son, is one of those texts that comes around like clockwork. Chances are good that you have heard one, if not many sermons on this parable. My sermon may not give you anything new, but it may remind you of what you already know, and that too has value.

It’s Not Fair!

In this week’s Gospel reading, we start with an allusion to an absolutely outrageous story. Pontius Pilate, we hear, killed Jews who were making a sacrifice in the temple—an act custom-made to provoke outrage. Mixing human blood with the blood of a sacrifice in the temple made it ritually unclean and invalid; Pilate ordering the murder of Galileans during sacrifice was the equivalent of committing murder, then publicly defiling the bodies in a way that caused God to turn away from the murder victims. I’ve summed it up as best I can by sharing a comic in your bulletin from one of my favorite online strips, xkcd. If you find this comic funny, you are very weird and highly educated. Sir, madame: I salute you.

Disillusioned

Today’s bumper sticker theology (one of my favorites): “Comfort the afflicted; afflict the comfortable.” However you find yourself right now, stop. Observe the world around you. I love the sun. I love the rain. Some days, we get both at the same time. I brought bubble wrap today. I enjoy popping bubble wrap.

The Look of Love

Today’s bumper sticker theology: “If evolution is outlawed, only outlaws will evolve.” As you may know, today is Valentine’s Day. If you forgot this, and you feel like it might have been important for you to remember, the QFC at the top of the hill has a serviceable floral department. On a completely unrelated note, an audio recording and transcript of this sermon will be posted on the church’s website; so if you needed, for example, to step out for a last-minute floral emergency, you could catc
